 A two-year postdoctoral position (deadline for application, JANUARY 21, 2012) is currently available at the Laboratory of Neurophysiology of Genoa University in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT).

The Neurophysiology laboratory at University (5 staff scientists plus 10 postdocs and students) is fully equipped for molecular and cellular biology, morphology, electrophysiology and live cell imaging.

Moreover, members of the lab have access to the laboratories and high technology equipment of the IIT Department of Neuroscience and Brain Technologies, including access to Real time PCR , live imaging, confocal, electrophysiology, sequencing and electron microscopy facilities.

The research activity is focused on the study of mutations identified in Synapsin genes in human epileptic and autistic patients. In an attempt to elucidate the molecular basis of the epileptic and/or autistic phenotype, primary neuronal cultures derived from Synapsin null mice are used to overexpress Synapsins carrying mutations identified in human patients.

We found that two mutations impact severely on neuronal development. The project will concern the study of the molecular mechanisms through which mutated Synapsins lead to impaired neuronal development and on the implication in the pathogenesis of epilepsy and/or autism. Previous experience in molecular and cellular biology is welcome.
