The discovery of adult neurogenesis has fundamentally changed our idea of how our brain can adapt to physiological and environmental stimuli. It is now challenging to understand how newly formed neurons integrate into functional networks and how their intrinsic properties compare to those of existing neurons generated during development. Another emerging theme is that many genes required for normal neurogenesis and development, as well as for neural stem cell differentiation, play crucial roles in several neuropathological conditions.
