Description: Unilateral facial paralysis due to nerve injury is a quite common condition, that requires complex and invasive corrective surgical procedures. Here, we propose to detect bioelectrical signal from the nerve branches of the healthy hemiface (contralaterally to the lesion) and to reproduce them symmetrically on the lesioned side to achieve a functional recovery of the paralyzed hemiface. Experiments will be performed on rodents and the functional recovery will be assessed by monitoring the restoration of the symmetric movement of the vibrissae. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with experience in animal handling, in-vivo experiments on rodents, and/or microsurgical operations on animals. Previous experience in biophysics/electrophysiology will be positively evaluated.
