The European Commission figures show that the total number of animals used in 2022 in the 27 Member Countries was 6,996,249. The Commission also reported that, since 2018, there has been a decreasing trend (around half a million animals less) in the use of animals in regulatory testing and a 10% decrease in the use of rats and mice over the last five years. In 2022, 90% of the total animals used for research purposes were mice, fish, rats and birds. Dogs, cats and monkeys accounted for around 0.23% of the total.
